Last week, 2 garbage collectors were struck by motorists and killed. In Pennsylvania, a helper was behind the truck and was pinned against it by a motorist. In Georgia, a helper was struck by a car when he was crossing a street to get a can. In a 3rd accident, in upstate New York, a collector was seriously injured in a similar “struck by” accident.

Motorists are URGED to drive cautiously and slowly in the vicinity of solid waste and recycling trucks. The workers who collect your trash and recyclables are someone’s father, husband, brother, or son. NSWMA has developed a public awareness campaign — Slow Down to Get Around — to make motorists more aware of the hazard they pose to solid waste collection employees. Get more information about this effort.

NSWMA has produced Spanish versions its Be Safe, Be Proud series of four safety-training videos, and is making them available to garbage companies and local governments. The Spanish versions will help those companies and governments with Spanish-speaking employees reduce their accidents and injuries. More information and order forms for these videos may be found on the EIA Store. In any and every language, making safety a top priority is one of NSWMA’s main missions.
