NSWMA has filed comments with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in response to a petition for rulemaking from the Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials (ASTSWMO) regarding possible new rules for the disposal of tritium exit signs. NSWMA’s comments assert that NRC should exercise its full regulatory authority to prevent the disposal of tritium signs in municipal solid waste landfills because these signs directly impact landfill leachate when the tritium is released. A damaged exit sign likely will have relatively high levels of tritium in it, and should not be handled or disposed in a municipal solid waste landfill.

Trash collection, processing and disposal includes potentially dangerous activities that require proper safety training and well-maintained equipment. NSWMA has one of the most comprehensive safety programs for the entire industry. We work with the U.S. Department of Labor and other government agencies to make safety part of every company’s DNA. And we continue to advocate for new laws and regulations to help keep our industry’s employees safe. In recent years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has found that these efforts have made a difference in decreasing the fatality rate for collectors of trash/recyclables. The public has a role to play in keeping garbage men safe…Please slow down when you see a garbage truck in your community.

Waste Pro has gone the step beyond trash hauling by dedicating itself to making a positive inpact on the environment. It is converting 5,000 sq. ft. of roof area to a 25 kW solar power plant that will supply 120 kW hours of electricity per day, enough to cover most of the building’s needs. Waste Pro is working to have the solar-powered building itself certified ‘green.’ Waste Pro is also one of the first garbage companies in the country to use hybrid electric/gas waste hauling trucks which also include an advanced oil purification system to cut oil use. The Bradenton facility, at 7921 15 St. East, serves Manatee, Sarasota, and Pinellas Counties and is part of Florida’s largest privately-owned waste company.
