While competing in the Miss America contest as the representative of the District of Columbia, Jennifer Corey is publicly promoting stricter recycling laws and funds for advancements in recycling technologies. She has a long history with recycling. Her grandfather started a family garbage and recycling company before he graduated high school in order to support his family. That family company grew into one of the largest waste removal companies in New York. Her father and uncles still work in the garbage and recycling industry today. Jennifer is a twenty-two year-old cum laude graduate of American University where she majored in music concentrating in vocal performance and minored in criminal justice. She is employed with the Washington National Opera in the Placido Domingo Apprentice Program in the Education and Community Programs Department. Jen will be competing for the title of Miss America on January 30, 2010 on TLC.

“Environmentalists. Every Day.” Communications Toolkit Training Program
Session #4: Internal/Employee Communications – Tuesday, February 9, 3:00 PM EST
Your employees/colleagues represent your business and our industry to your customers and other people who live in the communities you serve, including media representatives and government officials. Informed and enthusiastic employees are the most effective ambassadors for any company or industry. Even if your employees aren’t being interviewed by media or doing formal public speaking, they still can benefit from having an understanding what your company does and why it is important. If nothing else, helping the employees of your company better understand the good work done by your company and our industry will help instill pride and improve employee morale, which has been shown to reduce absenteeism, lower turnovers, improve recruiting, reduce the number of accidents, improve efficiency and foster better customer service. What sort of information should you share with your employees? They need to know your company’s goals and the industry’s environmental goals and messages, so they can share them and help promote them. There are easy-to-implement tactics that can help you communicate with your employees. During this webinar, industry leaders will share what has worked for them in their companies. Participants also will have the opportunity to learn about internal/employee communications resources that NSWMA and WASTEC make available to their members. The session will conclude with time for questions and answers.
Session speakers currently include Nancy Bretas (Communications Manager from Republic Services) and Andy Schweizer (President of Ace Solid Waste).

When policymakers do not understand our industry or have outdated ideas about us, their policy decisions can impede good waste management practices, reduce the quality of life in our communities and weaken our bottom lines as businesses. That is why we must regularly reach out to government officials – whether in city hall or in the statehouse – to ensure they understand our issues and how their decisions affect us and the communities we serve. For most NWSMA members, government relations activities are a natural part of doing business. But for others, it’s still a remote and distant activity. NWSMA leads the solid waste industry’s government relations efforts with a network of active state chapters, leading state lobbyists and a growing Federal presence. By being a part of these joint NSWMA government relations activities, companies increase the likelihood that the industry’s voice will be heard in legislative and regulatory discussions.
In many instances, these government relations efforts are enhanced by different sorts of outreach efforts. You and your company can have a big impact by learning how to engage in outreach to government officials. So, whether you’re a seasoned pro or new to this game, please join us on Thursday, October 22nd from 2-3 p.m. EDT for our next “Environmentalists. Every Day.” grassroots communications training webinar. During the session, you will hear from companies just like yours as they discuss best practices for communicating with government officials. You will learn how easy it is to launch government outreach programs as we share strategies and tips.
In addition, all webinar participants will be entered in a random drawing to win one of two American Express gift certificates.

In an article titled, “Methane from Landfills Localities are finding new ways to use a potent greenhouse gas,” Governing Magazine’s September issue quotes NSWMA’s President and CEO Bruce Parker. “Methane can be used for multiple purposes,” says Bruce J. Parker, president and CEO of the National Solid Wastes Management Association. What’s more, Parker says, it’s reliable. “Unlike sun and solar power, you have continuous access. A landfill is taking gas out 24/7.”

The NSWMA just issued the following in a release:
“Like most of Mr. Obama’s other nominees, the people chosen to head these important agencies have extensive knowledge and experience of the challenges this country faces, and we look forward to working closely with them,” said Bruce Parker, president and chief executive of the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA).
“The solid waste management industry deals every day with the most practical aspects of solving this country’s environmental and energy issues, and we are delighted with the President-elect’s emphasis on pragmatic solutions,” he said.
“We especially look forward to working with the new team on achieving the huge potential benefits from increased recycling and greatly expanding the development of clean, renewable energy from landfill gas,” said Parker.
